Friends of Baucau support the development of Permaculture Practice

Following up a request from our Friends in Baucau, we are looking for ways to support local initiatives to promote greater use of permaculutre in household gardens and in school community gardens.

Recently, 10 young people from five Suco of Baucau Vila (Admin Post) attended the Perma Youth Camp, 26th Nov – 1st December 2018 ably led by the Peresident of the Baucau Friendship Association, Xefe of Samalari Suco, Rui Sequeira. Friends of Baucau collected funds to pay for their registration and transport and each of the participating Suco’s provided tools and equipment for their week long learning about Permaculture in Timor-Leste.

In Samalari Village many of the households have already introduced household vegetable gardens based on permaculture principles.  The hope is that these young people can support their respective villages to use permaculture in starting up or improving their household gardens.

Our second initiative for which we are collecting funds now is to establish a School Community Garden in Bucoli’s Basic Education Central School. Watch this space for more developments.

Justice in the Timor Sea : get informed

Janelle Saffin has recently been included in a Fairfax/Westpac list of Australia’s most influential women for her work in Timor-Leste. As senior legal advisor to the East Timorese government, she wishes to give back to the Timorese the area which they rightfully own according to UN convention on the Laws of the Sea. We are thrilled that she could donate her time to highlight areas of injustice at a public forum this October, and warmly invite you to attend.

Baucau Friendship Tour 2015 – A great success

IMG_2105Friends of Baucau joined with the Monash Friends of Vemasse on a 14 day tour of Timor-Leste with a focus on Baucau District in July 2015.  Organised by Timor Adventures this was primarily a Friendship Tour where in addition to enjoying the tourist sites and beautiful country we also spent time deepening our friendship relations with the people of Vemasse and Baucau Sub-Districts.  So, most  of our time was visiting the people in their homes and offices; talking about each others lives and totally enjoying their warm hospitality.

We were also joined by a representative of the Friends of Ossuala, a mountainous village in Vemasse who had the opportunity to visit schools this Victorian based group have been supporting.

The visit also provided an opportunity for us to meet for a day and share experiences with representatives of the Friendship associations of Baguia, Venelali, Baucau and Vemasse, together with the Marist
