Friends of Baucau Congratulates Timor on Successful Elections

Friends of Baucau Inc. wishes to congratulate the people of Timor-Leste on the successful outcome of the recently held National Parliamentary Elections. The New Government, the Alliance of Change for Progress (AMP) won 49.6% of the votes and a clear majority of seats. This victory ends 10 months of a hung parliament due to the inability of the Fretilin Party to form a Majority Government at the last elections.

The election process, and hence the democratisation process continues to grow stronger in this new nation. Total voter turnout for this election was 80.86% up from 76.74% in the previous national parliamenary election and 98.27% of these votes were valid. The Fretilin Party won 34.18% of the votes and represents a formidable opposition with other minor parties, including PD and FDD also winning a place in the new Parliament.
Fidelis Magalhaes, an official from the alliance, said the result should break the deadlock and provide the people of Timor-Leste with the absolute majority in Parliament needed for continued and sustainable development of our country.

Our submission to the Joint Parliamentary Hearing on the CMATS Treaty

We are proud to inform readers that the Friends of Baucau made a submission to the Parliamentary hearing into the consequences of cancelling the Timor Sea Treaty. It was based on thorough research by Damian Kingsbury, and fine tuned at the eleventh hour by Damian, Chris Dureau (discharged from hospital that day after an operation) and Christine Perkins.

As a member of FoB, I am so grateful to have such knowledge, experience and passion driving our group to get important submissions like this done.
